Well, my head gasket and my transmission took a crap in my 528... With almost 200k on the clock, not a shocker.
So I'll be swapping in an ls3 from here (already purchased): http://www.crateenginedepot.com/store/L ... 8C509.aspx

This transmission: http://www.monstertrans.com/store/produ ... fullSite=1

And an M5 rear diff and one piece custom driveshaft.
I'll be making the exhaust and mounts myself.

I'll be starting the teardown soon...

Edit: fixed links

Neither of the links work for me, but that is going to be sick!

Those years of GM cars were the worst! Oh yeah and nice project. There is a local SPK guy I met who did a LS1 swap into his E39 528i. He's on this board but doesn't post much.

It was fast... But a piece of crap.
There's a few guys on various boards that have done e39 LS swaps that have been a lot of help so far.

I'm hoping to get another 50k at least out of my M50TU. You're not leaving me much hope there! Lol.

And the oilpan that it came with looks like it will work without modification.

Yes, automatic. Here's my reasoning. 1, the car was auto to begin with, so I didn't want to add a pedal and do a bunch of pluming. 2, this auto box is BULLETPROOF, I can manually lock the converter with the press of a button and can shift manually. And 3, when I drag or race of any kind, I won't lose time by having to manually shift. Better for auto-x, drag, and track racing IMO
I can also program my shift points for different driving styles and change the program with the press of a button.

But... it's still an auto :wink I just like the shifting and heel/toe aspect of driving a car but its your ride! Still a cool project too. Keep the 528i badge on it too :roffle

The 528 badge is long gone, but that'd be funny!

That's a little bit different... lol

And actually, F1 drivers still control a clutch, gear selector and throttle. I'd argue it's more 'manual' than 'automatic.'
