Quick pic of how the car sits outside my shop. Had 3 people stop in asking questions about it. Lol

Yes mig does use 75% argon in most cases, but it's not about the gas, it's about how the arc and filler material is applied. Mig, the filler is the arc, tig, you can pre-heat the base metal before adding more. It's a cleaner, smother, stronger weld.

Edit: Fun fact, TIG used to be called "heli-arc" because helium was used as the shielding gas.

As for purging, I'll tape the exhaust ports, cap the other end and attach a bottle of argon with a regulator and fill the headers before I start welding.

Take lots of pics when you do this if you can! I'd love to see how it all goes down :)

Very curious to see how this car does in comparison to an e39 m5.

I've been taking lots of pics with my phone mostly. I'm hoping it'll give a supercharged e39 M5 a run for it's money.... And a stock e60 M5... We'll see after a dyno run.

So, headers will be set back a few days. I need straight pieces longer than 5" and auto parts stores and even exhaust shops don't carry bare steel tubing, everything is aluminized. One exhaust shop even tried to tell me aluminized will work fine for TIG welding.... I know where not to go for custom exhaust! Anyway, can't get what I need until Wednesday.

I know, but I think you made the right choice. Get hold of me when it's done and you're ready to sell! :shark

It'd have to be a pretty good offer for me to consider selling..... at least until I've had some time to enjoy it. lol

I got tubing in today and can start working on the headers again. Also got the fuel filter/regulator, dorman fittings, EFI flex hose, EFI safe clamps, fuel pump and misc fuel related accessories.

Been looking at installing a PLX gauge in place of the factory coolant temp guage in the cluster.... Anyone ever messed with something like that?

After a combined total of about 12 hours, the driver side header is done.

Hahaha! It will be a little while, I'm not gonna start it up until it's got full exhaust.

Thanks. That's the plan, but even with a jig/fixture they're going to be a pita!
